Alefs in wonderland was started by the
artist Josh Baum, to produce
art inspired by the beauty of
the Hebrew letters.
The vision is to introduce a lightness
and sense of play into traditional
Jewish art forms such as calligraphy,
manuscript illumination and paper cutting.
All the work is produced by Josh Baum
and all the designs are the property of
Alefs in Wonderland.

“My art comes from an urge to explore. I like the countryside. I like a good view. And once I’m face to face with a lovely scenery, I feel immediately tempted to find out what it’s concealing. The dark goings-on behind the façade of nature, you might say, or the hidden machinations of the animal kingdom.
To imagine and express this, I usually tap the lines linking religious icon art, renaissance painting and comic culture. I am particularly thrilled by the kind of spiritual terror you find expressed in the paintings of the old Flemish masters, and I’m trying to find out what happens when you apply that mood to the serene and harmless world of rural folk art.”
Paul Chatem’s extraordinary moving painting.
Paul Chatem was born in 1974 in Bellevue, Washington, and grew up in La Crescenta, California. He graduated from the Kansas City Art Institute in 1997 with a BFA in Illustration. While working various arts related jobs in the entertainment industry Paul developed his own personal work and started showing in group shows in Los Angeles. His first solo show “It Tastes like Whiskey” opened Feb. 2006 at the Black Maria Gallery in Atwater, CA. Since then his work has been featured at The Shooting Gallery in San Francisco CA, The Bluebottle Art Gallery in Seattle WA, CoproNason Gallery in Santa Monica CA, as well as in many group shows in North America and abroad. The World Unseen And Those In Between, Andy Kehoe’s solo show at Thinkspace opens tomorrow night. It looks like it’s going to be a great show. One thing I absolutely love about Thinkspace is they go above and beyond to represent their shows on line. The gallery does an amazing job of utilizing the web.
